A 16-year-old from North Carolina is to be arraigned in federal court on Friday, accused of taking part in Internet bomb threats made to IPFW, Purdue and campuses in other states.
He and unnamed others are also accused of taking money to call in bomb threats to high schools so they would close.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday that a three-count indictment has been returned against Ashton Lundeby of Oxford, N.C., in connection with the threats. He has been in federal custody since March 6.
The charges against him refer specifically to the IPFW and Purdue cases, and there is also a blanket charge of conspiring to make bomb threats and conveying false information through interstate commerce.
The indictment alleges that Lundeby and others called authorities Jan. 31, saying a bomb had been placed on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
He is also accused in connection with similar calls in February and March to Purdue University in West Lafayette, as well as to other universities in other states.
None of the high schools listed in the indictment are in Indiana or Ohio.
