Whitney Houston was under water and apparently unconscious when she was found in a hotel bathtub, Beverly Hills police said Monday.
  • Noted, but not awarded
Since its beginnings in the 1970s, rap music has transformed from an underground, street-based sound to a definitive part of pop culture, transcending race and becoming one of the strongest – and most prolific – voices of today’s generation.

In addition to the food, games and parade, the Fort Wayne Newspapers Three Rivers Festival offers plenty of opportunities to see some great concerts. Here is a look at who you can expect to see perform at this year’s festival:

Drowning Pool – Since forming in Dallas in 1996, this heavy metal band has had three lead vocalists. There aren’t a lot of rock bands apart from Spinal Tap that could survive the quickness and quality of that turnover rate. Drowning Pool was considerably aided by their latest hire’s pre-existing fame: He’s Ryan McCombs, formerly of the band Soil. Drowning Pool performs at 10:20 p.m. Saturday in Headwaters Park.

Chuck Wicks – Thanks to the bookers over at the Neon Armadillo, TRF will do country right in 2009. Wicks might be the only true up-and-comer on the TRF concert lineup this year. Wicks’ single, “Stealing Cinderella” was the biggest debut for a new country artist and the fastest-climbing debut country single in 2007. In his personal life, this “Dancing With the Stars” star is dating fellow singer and dancer Julianne Hough. And he ain’t exactly hard on the eyes, as if I need to point that out. He performs at 9:15 p.m. Monday at Headwaters Park.

Twisted Sister – It might be the most commercial popular glam rock band in history. Of course, the glam rock look plays a lot differently on a 54-year-old guy than it does on a 21-year-old guy. I’m not sure if lead singer Dee Snider, 54, still gets all dolled up. At least we will have a chance to find out. If he’d won the CMT reality show called “Gone Country” last year, we’d be contending with the sight of him in a cowboy hat. Twisted Sister performs July 18. The show begins at 6 p.m.

Tribute acts – Local Pink Floyd tribute band Pink Droyd performs at 9 tonight at Headwaters Park. U2 Zoo performs Saturday at the Dome at 5702 Engle Road. The hair band tribute act, Hairbangers Ball, performs at 10:30 p.m. Thursday at Headwaters Park. And regional Jimmy Buffett tribute act Parrots of the Caribbean performs at 9:30 p.m. July 17 in Headwaters Park.
