A LaGrange County Jail inmate died Thursday night after he hanged himself in his cell.

Roger D. Fulks, 35, of rural Shipshewana, was being held on a charge of failing to appear in court for a misdemeanor driving while suspended and a probation violation warrant from St. Joseph County, Mich., police said.

Jail officers found him unresponsive about 11:15 p.m. during a routine inmate check. Paramedics later pronounced him dead at the jail.

The LaGrange County Coroner ruled Fulks’ death a suicide from asphyxia by hanging, police said.

Indiana State Police Detective Jeff Boyd is investigating the case; he would not say whether Fulks left a note or any other indication as to why he took his life.

LaGrange County Jail officials would not comment on the death Friday.

Fulks is the brother of Chadrick Fulks, who gained national attention in 2002 during a two-week multi-state crime spree that resulted in the deaths of two women, Boyd said.

Chadrick Fulks was eventually arrested and is serving a death-penalty sentence at the federal prison in Terre Haute.
