Local projects awarded grants

A number of local projects have been awarded 2009 Community Development Block Grant allocations from the City of Fort Wayne totaling $235,000.

Mayor Tom Henry made the announcement Tuesday morning at Wellspring's Daycamp at First Presbyterian Church. The Wellspring camp, which serves children from low-income families, is among those getting funding.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development provides Community Development Block Grant annual grants on a formula basis, concentrating on providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, targeting people with low and moderate incomes.

The recipients include:

  • African Immigrants Social and Economic Development Agency, job coaching initiative for African refugees, $10,000.
  • Associated Churches of Fort Wayne Food Bank, $14,000 to provide food through 26 food pantry sites.
  • Blue Jacket Inc., career academy for former felons, $10,000.
  • Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, $10,000 for refugee resettlement.
  • City of Fort Wayne, $17,000 to provide and haul away trash containers for neighborhoods wanting to clean up debris and abandoned tires.
  • East Allen County Schools Neighborhood Action Center at Autumn Woods Apartment, $10,000.
  • Fort Wayne Medical Society Foundation, $10,000 to provide prenatal visits and lab screening for women awaiting Medicaid eligibility approval.
  • Fort Wayne Medical Society Foundation, $10,000 for health education and case management for low-income, high-risk pregnant women.
  • Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation, $7,500 to Jennings Work Study to provide job-skills training to high schoolers.
  • Fort Wayne Urban League, $7,500 to provide instruction and assistance that educates and equips children for economic self-reliance and provides adults with job skills.
  • Fort Wayne Urban League, $7,000 for pre-apprenticeship to prepare candidates for employment in the construction field.
  • Genesis Outreach, $8,000 for center to train homeless people for work using paid "internships."
  • Mental Health Association in Allen County, $9,000 to for client advocacy for those with mental illness.
  • Burmese Advocacy Center, $8,000 to provide refugee and immigrants with employment skills.
  • Neighborhood Health Clinics, $14,000 to provide medical and dental services to the Burmese population.
  • Super Shot Inc., $9,000 to help provide 26 free monthly immunization clinics to provide immunizations to children for childhood diseases.
  • The Reclamation Project Inc., $10,000 to help with English language development among newly resettled adult refugees.
  • Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities, $9,000 to help provide wheelchair access ramps to Fort Wayne residents who have a physical disability and limited income
  • United Hispanic Americans Inc., $9,000 to provide job skills and job search training to individuals in Spanish and English, as well as computer literacy workshops twice a month.
  • United Way of Allen County, $10,000 for the Ready to Learn/Ready Schools program.
  • United Way of Allen County, $5,000 for outreach efforts to low- and moderate-income workers who can benefit from the federal and state Earned Income Tax Credit through free, local tax preparation services.
  • Wellspring Interfaith Social Services Inc., $14,000, for the program providing food and personal hygiene needs once a month for those living primarily in the central city.
  • Wellspring Interfaith Social Services Inc., $9,000 for summer day camp for low-income children.
  • Wellspring Interfaith Social Services Inc., $8,000 to help provide physical, nutritional and cognitive support for older adults.
