Irish add defensive commitment

Notre Dame’s football team collected another oral commitment to add to a strong defensive class.

Prince Shembo, a defensive end out of Ardrey Kell High in Charlotte, N.C., committed to play for the Irish in 2010, according to media reports.

Shembo will likely be moved off the line at Notre Dame to weak side linebacker.

Mike Farrell, a national recruiting analyst for Rivals.com, said the transition should be easy for the 6-foot-2, 225-pounder. Shembo is a four-star recruit according to Rivals.com and Scout.com lists him as a three-star recruit.

"I watched him work in space at a camp, and he came through with flying colors," Farrell said in a phone interview Wednesday.

"He has a lot of athletic ability and nastiness, which Notre Dame needs on defense. He has a good attitude for a defensive player. He wants to hit people."

Notre Dame currently has 14 commitments for 2010, with eight defensive players on the list.

Jeremy Crabtree, a national analyst for Rivals.com, said he thinks the Irish should target a running back at this point in the recruiting process.

"They have done very well at meeting their needs at defensive back and defensive end," Crabtree said. "Running back really jumps out. The have gone all over the country searching for a running back."

Crabtree said three backs Notre Dame could pursue are Jordon James from Corona (Calif.) High, Cameron Roberson from Newbury Park (Calif.) High and Michael Dyer from Little Rock Christian in Little Rock, Ark.
