5 teens hurt in 2-car crash

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department

Five teens, 15 to 18, were injured in a two-car crash late Wednesday in Kosciusko County.

The sheriff's department was called to county roads 600 West and 500 South at 10:24 p.m. after receiving a call about multiple injuries.

Deputies arrived and immediately called for the county FACT/Reconstruction Team. FACT Team members determined that Eric B. Salyer, 18, of Union Street, northwest of Claypool, had been driving a 1988 Buick Regal west on County Road 500 South when it failed to stop for the stop sign at 600 West.

The Buick Regal pulled into the path of a 2004 Pontiac Gran Prix going north on 600 West driven by Bruce K. Tillman Jr., 18, of 600 West, southwest of Claypool, the FACT Team determined.

Salyer and a passenger in his car, Christopher Sexton, 15, of Burket, were both unconscious at the scene and were flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, the sheriff's department said. It said they were both listed in serious condition Thursday morning.

Tillman refused medical treatment at the scene and had only minor bleeding, the sheriff's department said, but his passengers were both transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital with unknown injuries. They were identified as Nicholas S. Trier, 17, of the Warsaw area, and Colt Johnson, 16, of the Mentone area.

The FACT Team said that the crash is still under investigation, pending drug and alcohol testing and that it is currently unknown whether seat belts were used.

Assisting at the crash scene were members of the Mentone EMS, Burket Fire Department, and Multi-Township EMS.
