A construction worker died on the city's northwest side about noon Tuesday after his brother accidentally backed a pickup truck into him, Fort Wayne police said.

Three brothers were replacing a concrete driveway at 1813 W. State Blvd. when one, thinking the Ford pickup truck they were using was in "drive," hit the accelerator and accidentally backed into his brother, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was pinned between the detached garage of the home and the bumper of the pickup, said Officer Michael Joyner, Fort Wayne police spokesman.

Emergency workers freed the pinned man and took him to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, Joyner said.

The driver of the truck, likely distraught about injuring his brother, walked away from the scene, Joyner said. Police were not able to locate him immediately after the crash. The third brother was cooperating with police.
