Taking a look at left defensive end

Indiana is looking for a bounce-back year from left defensive end Greg Middleton. The senior followed up a record-breaking 2007 season (16 sacks) with four sacks. His 20 career sacks rank fourth on the school's all-time list. Middleton started five games and appeared in 11 last season. He had 18 tackles (down from 50 in 2007), but shared the team lead with two fumble recoveries. IU coach Bill Lynch said Middleton has been "very impressive" since returning in January for workouts. His teammates have also noticed.

"He's done a great job in the offseason improving on his skills," defensive end Jammie Kirlew said. "…Teams are going to have to pick their poison."

Sophomore Fred Jones had four tackles in a backup role last season. He saw time in all 12 games on the defensive line and on special teams. He has missed some time early this fall with a foot injury.

Thursday will be the first of two previews of defensive tackle.
