Verbatim: Feeding Indiana’s Hungry gets new leader

Statement issued Thursday:

Feeding Indiana's Hungry (FIsH) is pleased to announce Emily Weikert Bryant has been hired to serve as its Executive Director. Feeding Indiana's Hungry (FIsH) is a network of nine Feeding America food banks in Indiana dedicated to feeding hungry Hoosiers. Each of its members distributes donated and purchased food to non-profit organizations that serve those at risk of hunger in Indiana. The mission of Feeding Indiana's Hungry is to bring together public and private sectors to effectively utilize Indiana's resources to feed its hungry citizens. (www.feedingindianashungry.org)

"Ms. Bryant brings a great deal of experience and enthusiasm to the organization and we are extremely fortunate to have her at the helm," said John Etling, chairman, Feeding Indiana's Hungry and executive director of Catholic Charities Terre Haute. "Our target population is the 28.6% of Hoosiers living at or below the 185% federal level of poverty. And with those numbers increasing daily here in Indiana we need to be even more proactive then we have been. Emily has the expertise, the ideas, and the connections we need to move aggressively and thoughtfully to identify and secure the resources needed to help feed Indiana's hungry."

Nationwide the demand for emergency food assistance has grown 30% in the last year and FIsH member food banks have turned that challenge into an opportunity by strengthening their partnership and looking beyond the traditional food banking model. "I am excited to be joining a group of individuals and associations committed to assisting Hoosiers with one of the most vital needs to survive and thrive," said Bryant. "I am truly humbled by the opportunity and look forward to the strides that can be made in Indiana to eliminate hunger. With the help of generous partners and donors, FIsH will continue to grow and provide more quality and Hoosier-produced food for those in need, especially the 190,000 children statewide who unfortunately know how hunger feels. We provide a basic need for Hoosiers and will continue to advocate and educate on their behalf how important it is to have access to quality, affordable, nutritious food to nurture the body and mind. Hunger isn't just an issue in other countries. It occurs daily in every Hoosier community, and in our state that certainly should not be the case."
