VALPARAISO – Former Valparaiso University President Robert Schnabel has died at age 86.
The university announced its leader from 1978 to 1988 died Tuesday in Angola, where he had lived in recent years. Schnabel arrived at the private Lutheran school after time as president of Concordia College in Bronxville, N.Y., and as a philosophy professor at Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne.
His tenure at Valparaiso included the construction of three major campus buildings – the Athletics-Recreation Center, the School of Law and the communications and computer facility that bears his name.
A commemoration service is being planned at the school’s Chapel of the Resurrection.
