Rising out of the ashes

The recession that began in December 2007 has bounced thousands of workers from a steady paycheck to the unemployment line. Some of those workers have always dreamed of owning their own company.

If that’s you – or someone you know – welcome to Fresh Starts, a special Labor Day section that replaces our normal Monday Business section.

Fresh Starts provides insight and strategies for people who have lost employment but have skills and services they could sell as an entrepreneur.

Stepping out on your own may seem like a challenge, but you won’t be alone.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a prominent outplacement consulting firm, in late July released results of a survey that showed 8.7 percent of job seekers who gained employment in the second quarter of this year did so by starting their own enterprises.

That was up from 6.4 percent in the previous quarter and nearly double the startup rate of 4.3 percent in the second quarter of 2008.

Although Challenger, Gray & Christmas CEO John Challenger cautioned against starting a business in such a tough economic climate, we know there are risk takers among us.

And if you’re willing to take a risk – or know someone who is – Fresh Starts is a first start.
