A Howe man was in serious condition Sunday night after the all-terrain vehicle he was riding struck a row of trees in LaGrange County.

Kelly Ray Williamson Jr., 38, was riding the vehicle about 10:20 p.m. Saturday on private property near 5945 N. County Road 250 E.

He struck a grove of trees and was thrown from the ATV, Indiana conservation officers said.

Williamson was not wearing a helmet at the time, officers said.

Williamson was flown to Fort Wayne’s Parkview Hospital in critical condition suffering from a severe laceration to his head.

His condition improved during the day Sunday to serious, officials said.

Kitchen fire guts south-end home

A fire Sunday afternoon badly damaged a southeast-side house.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called to 4226 Mirada Drive about 1:45 p.m. and found the kitchen area on fire.

The fire department determined that unattended cooking sparked the blaze, which caused extensive damage to the kitchen and surrounding areas of the house, the fire department said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and there were no reports of injuries.

Struck pedestrian improves at hospital

A local man who was struck by a car while walking along South Clinton Street on Saturday has improved.

Jesse Thomas stepped into the path of a white Volkswagen Jetta in the 3200 block of South Clinton Street about 9:15 p.m. Saturday.

The car was traveling south through a small curve when it struck Thomas.

Thomas was taken to a hospital in critical condition. No charges are expected to be filed, Liza Thomas said.
