And Another Thing

Drama kings

If you weren't in Parkview Field last night, you have my permission to kick yourself now. Hard.

I say this after watching the TinCaps advance to the Midwest League finals in, once again, ridiculously dramatic fashion. Twice in the last four innings, they trailed, only to rally in improbable fashion. Then the last person anyone expected to end it -- Robert Lara, who was oh-for-the-playoffs -- ends it with a walkoff home run in the 10th after working the count full and fouling off at least three pitches.

As I said in my column this morning, Hollywood wouldn't touch that storyline in a Hazmat suit. It's only been six days, but the TinCaps have chewed more scenery in the playoffs so far than Al Pacino in "And Justice For All." And last night was the topper.

I've seen some dramatic stuff in 22 years covering sports in this town, and last night immediately went into my top three. No. 1 remains the fourth game of the 1991 Turner Cup finals, when the Komets trailed three-games-to-none and John Anderson, who'd been out with an injury, skated onto the ice without a helmet as the crowd went nuts. Then he proceeded to score a hat trick in the first period to help the Komets tave off elimination.

For sheer drama, nothing tops that, although Justin Hodgman's Cup-winning goal in the third overtime in 2008 comes close. Now comes Lara.

Can't wait to see what happens next.
