Indiana Tech hires head basketball coach

Rodney Hamilton, a two-year men’s assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State, has been named women’s basketball head coach at Indiana Tech, the university announced Monday.

Hamilton, whose teams had a 1-19 record two seasons ago (11 wins were vacated because of NCAA violations from a previous season) and 3-27 last year, also served as an associate coach at Crichton College, and was the head coach of the boys team at Westside High School in his hometown of Memphis, Tenn.

He was the first player to have his jersey number retired at Georgia State University, where he holds the school record for points (1,515), free throw percentage (.838), assists (535), steals (212) and games started (105).

Michael Waltrip Racing has hired Pat Tryson as the crew chief for Martin Truex Jr. next season. … Formula One and Grand Prix F1 du Canada Inc. settled a financial dispute that began last fall and led to the cancellation of the 2009 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

Homestead hosting contest Saturday

The Homestead Cheer Competition will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the school’s gym. It will consist of stunt groups, varsity, junior varsity, freshman and middle school squads competing. Admission is $5.

Cougars linebacker earns honor

Saint Francis senior linebacker Troy Hudson has been named Mid-States Football Association Mideast League defensive player of the week. The Peru native tied for the team tackles with six in the Cougars’ 55-0 victory over Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday. He also had a 33-yard interception return and a sack.

Injured Trojans to practice

USC Trojans coach Pete Carroll said quarterback Matt Barkley and safety Taylor Mays both will practice this week despite injuries. Barkley has a bruised right shoulder, and Mays has a mild right knee sprain.

HOCKEY

Ex-Komet signs with Kalamazoo

Forward Olivier Legault, who played for the Fort Wayne Komets the last two seasons, has signed on to play with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL. Legault has 294 penalty minutes in 94 professional games.

SOCCER

American Cup coming to city

The Kohl’s U.S. Youth Soccer American Cup, the largest recreational youth soccer tournament in the United States, will be played Sept. 26 at Hefner Fields. The under-6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 boys and girls participating will bring together 140 teams on 15 soccer fields for the 10th annual event.

Fort Wayne native wins MAC award

Former Snider standout Michelle Moore was named the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week for Western Michigan, where she is a senior. Moore was named to the all-tournament team at the Panther Invitational after leading the Broncos with 65 kills and 72.5 points.
