An Avilla bicyclist died early today of injuries he received when he was struck by a car at the intersection of Indiana 3 and East Albion Street, according to Avilla Police Chief Glen Wills.

Sheldon M. Durost, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene by Noble County Coroner Dr. Terry Gaff and Noble County EMS, police said.

The coroner will conduct an autopsy today.

Durost was traveling west on East Albion Street shortly after midnight when he was struck by a southbound Hyundai Elantra, driven by Joseph Lee of Fort Wayne.

Lee said the traffic signal was green, and he did not see the bicyclist until the collision occurred, police said. The driver stopped to check on the bicyclist's welfare and notified emergency services.

The driver was not charged. Avilla police continue their investigation.

An Indiana State Police accident reconstruction team assisted with the investigation along with Kendallville police.
