Poop, cookies and the joys of dog ownership

There’s no nice way to put it. Denali will not use the yard to go No. 2. He has no problems going in other people’s yards (and sometimes our living room) but Mark and I cannot just take him out to let him do his business.

We have to take him on a walk. Many times, a couple miles before things happen.

When we got him a few months ago, we thought this idiosyncrasy might be just anxiety and he needed to get used to his surroundings. The vet, a month after we got him, said he might need the exercise to get things going.

Great. Just great. I’m sure she’d say the same thing when dinner turns into dinner and a movie and she’s the one walking block after block at 11 p.m. wishing that things would get going. (Bonus about having a big dog? You can feel safe that no one will mess with you at 11 p.m.)

Disclaimer: My husband and I are very happy to walk our guy as we know it’s vital to his health. Before we even picked him up, we were planning the twice daily walks that Denali now enjoys.

Of course, the vet did add that we can try treating him when he does do his business – even if it’s not in our yard. Poop and you get a (dog) cookie. Eventually, Denali should connect the cookie to pooping and then poop when he sees the cookie presented in the yard.

A girl can hope ... right?
