Statement issued Tuesday:
Kroger Central Division announced its participation in The Kroger Co.’s $3 million "Giving Hope a Hand" national breast cancer awareness campaign. The campaign runs from Thursday, October 1st to Wednesday, October 14th. The campaign is collaboration with 36 Kroger vendor partners, as well as Kroger’s own manufacturing plants.
President of Kroger’s Central Division, Bob Moeder, said, "We are determined to be a compassionate and supportive corporate citizen in every local community we serve. In these challenging economic times, grassroots local organizations are carrying more of the burden than ever before. They are stepping up to help take care of their communities, benefitting Kroger customers and associates. This "Giving Hope a Hand" pink tag campaign, when combined with resources added by our local operating division level, will provide nearly $1 million in support to local cancer events and organizations. This includes three Susan G. Komen events in Illinois and three in Indiana. Our massive support of the Indianapolis Race for the Cure is our largest commitment to cancer causes in the multi-state division. Kroger also supports Cancer Day in Fort Wayne with well over $100,000, supports more than two dozen local American Cancer Society events across Indiana, Illinois and Missouri and supports a number of local cancer organizations across the region. We focus so strongly on cancer because cancer affects so many members of the Kroger family. We celebrate our survivors and we mourn those we have lost. Through hard work and generosity, Kroger associates, customers, vendors and community partners will eventually triumph over cancer. In the meantime, we are honored by the opportunity to do our part."
Mr. Moeder continued, "I want to thank our entire Central Division team for their hard work, but I want to offer special appreciation to Bev Miller, head cashier at our Ligonier, Indiana store, for her willingness to share her personal story as a breast cancer survivor. It is an honor to have her featured on full-size, stand-up displays in all 152 stores in our division, encouraging both her fellow associates and our customers to make a greater effort to improve their own health. Bev helped organize Kroger’s leading sponsorship of the inaugural Susan G. Komen Race for the cure in South, Bend, Indiana, including three years of organization-building prior to the inaugural race. If you’d like to know more about Bev and 54 other Kroger survivors, go to www.sharingcourage.com."
The "Giving Hope a Hand" campaign once again features a store-wide sales promotion of popular items, many of which will feature exclusive, specially marked pink packaging. This year, 2,000 items, including Kroger’s own products and popular items from Kroger partners including Kellogg, Kraft, Pepsi, General Mills, Campbell’s and Procter & Gamble, will be marked with special shelf tags to highlight their participation.
The Kroger Central Division has 152 food stores, 124 pharmacies and 55 fuel centers operating under five banners; Kroger, Scott’s, Owen’s, Hilander and Pay Less, with locations primarily in Indiana and Illinois, in addition to five stores in Missouri, one in Michigan and one in Ohio. Kroger Central Division is dedicated to supporting every local community it serves, contributing more than $10 million annually to local organizations, primarily focusing on hunger relief, K-12 education, health causes and diversity. At Kroger we value: honesty, respect, inclusion, diversity, safety and integrity.
