The numbers may not be dazzling for sophomore defensive tackle Ethan Johnson, but he said he is improving.
"Right now, I'm just focusing on my base technique and playing the run," Johnson said. "That is what teams have been doing against us, trying to run the ball against us. Last year, all I really did was pass rush. I couldn't play the run at all last year. Which is why they didn't have me in there for a lot of the times. I think my pass rush ability will show up a little more when I get more confident against the run."
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound sophomore moved from end to tackle this season. Through four games, Johnson has 10 tackles and one tackle for a loss. He also recovered a fumble and blocked an extra-point kick against Michigan State.
Last year, Johnson had 18 tackles, 3 ½ sacks, five tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries playing in 13 games and making four starts.
"He is doing some more things that work for us, as a result, his numbers aren't big but he is not grading out poorly," defensive line coach Randy Hart said. "I would like his numbers to improve, but he's got tackles, assists, recovered fumbles and things like that. He's got some great hustle. I'm not down on his effort or his play."
Johnson's numbers this season did surprise him, but he said he isn't overly concerned about statistics as long as he and the coaches feel he is doing his job at tackle.
"I only have 10 tackles? That's wild," Johnson said. "When we watch the film, I have like 17 tackles on ours. So I'm like that's fine, I'm averaging like four, but I guess if it's just 10 that's not very good.
"I'm happy with what I've done, but I'm not content at all. I'll continue to keep trying to get better every day. Hopefully, I can get more solo tackles so there is no question about it."
