Fresh punter

Notre Dame will use freshman punter Ben Turk on Saturday against Washington.

Turk replaces senior punter Eric Maust, who is averaging. 39.8 yards per punt. On Tuesday, coach Charlie Weis said the two punters have been close in practice, so the Irish went with experience in the first four games.

But against Purdue, the Irish were not happy with their punting and the switch was made, according to Weis.

Weis had some simple advice for Turk in his first game.

"Just catch it first of all. I think that would probably be a good start," Weis said. "He's got such a big leg; he wants to hit everything through the roof. The most important thing is catch it and get off. Once he gets a couple out of his system, he will do just fine."
