I'm out at the Fort Wayne Komets' first practice and someone has already caught my eye. It's Vince Laise, the 25-year-old forward who played for Maine two seasons ago. He looks fast and very agile, and he's got a decent shot.
It's early, and this is with only half the players, so take it for what it's worth.
I can't remember there ever being so many players here for a camp, at least not since the Komets were at the AAA level of hockey in 1998. There are 34 players vying for about 20 spots. That doesn't include Vince Tarantino, who is around but injured (hip) and unable to play for a couple of months.
I have seen more hitting than I would have expected for Day 1. Guys clearly know competition is stiff and they can't glide.
