Road worker killed in hit-skip on Ind. 1

An Indianapolis man was killed Monday in a hit-and-run crash as he painted aerial markings on a road in DeKalb County, sheriff’s deputies said.

The crash was reported just before 3 p.m. Monday. It occurred on Indiana 1, just south of St. Joe.

Andrew Landes, an employee at Indianapolis-based Butler, Fairman & Seufert Civil Engineers, was measuring the roadway as part of the painting process when he was struck by a vehicle driving south on Indiana 1, deputies said. Landes was killed instantly.

A witness described the vehicle as a tan pickup truck. Deputies tried to locate the truck, which was heading toward Spencerville.

A sheriff’s department airplane was used in the search. Indiana State and Allen County police also helped in the search for the vehicle.

As of Monday night, the vehicle had not been located. The crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information on the crash should call DeKalb County deputies at 925-3365.
