Ohioan charged in deadly hit-and-run

Turns himself in day after worker struck in DeKalb

An Ohio man has been charged in a hit-and-run crash Monday that killed a road worker in DeKalb County.

Robert Volkert, 77, of Hicksville, faces a preliminary felony charge of failure to stop after an accident involving death. He was being held in lieu of $3,000 bail at the DeKalb County Jail on Tuesday night.

Deputies said Volkert turned himself in to the sheriff’s department about 24 hours after the crash.

The accident occurred about 3 p.m. Monday along Indiana 1, just south of St. Joe.

Andrew Landes, 22, an employee of Indianapolis-based Butler, Fairman & Seufert Civil Engineers, was helping paint aerial markings on Indiana 1, according to sheriff’s deputies.

Landes, of Indianapolis, was measuring the road when he was struck and killed instantly.

Volkert told deputies he was the driver of a tan GMC pickup truck that was seen leaving the scene of the crash.

Deputies searched for the driver Monday night, including using a helicopter, but were unsuccessful.
