Gas leak disrupts work at Kraft plant

Kendallville’s Kraft Foods plant was evacuated Tuesday after a natural gas line was damaged and began leaking, Noble County Emergency Management Director Mick Newton said.

The leak occurred just before 6 a.m. in the 100 block of West Ohio Street, on the southern edge of Kendallville, when a city water department backhoe digging for a water line struck a 6-inch steel natural gas line, Newton said.

Gas supply to Kraft Foods, at 151 W. Ohio St., was cut off in the process, along with gas supply to five other industrial customers. Kraft Foods evacuated its employees because the lack of fuel affected business.

The other businesses were not operating at the time of the break, said Nick Meyer, a spokesman for Northern Indiana Fuel & Light.

Repairs were expected to be completed Tuesday night, he said.
