Two rescued from burning car after Huntington crash

A good Samaritan and off-duty police officers in Huntington helped save two people from their burning car after it crashed Saturday afternoon.

The passenger, Craig Lange, of rural Roanoke, was flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne where he was listed in critical condition. The driver, Steven Bruckman, of rural Huntington, was taken to Parkview Huntington Hospital then later transferred to Parkview in Fort Wayne, as well. He was listed in stable condition.

The crash occurred on Indiana 5 just south of Huntington County Road 700 South about 4 p.m. when Bruckman lost control of his northbound vehicle. It struck a utility pole at high speed and went airborne, slamming into two trees before coming to rest along the side of a third, police said.

After the crash, the vehicle caught fire.

Off-duty police officers removed the men from the burning vehicle while a neighbor extinguished the flames.
