Josh Gaines professional football career has resumed.
After being off the field for five weeks, the former Northrop and Penn State standout signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League a week ago.
Gaines has yet to play but could Sunday when Hamilton faces Montreal.
A 6-foot-1, 274-pound defensive lineman, Gaines spent NFL training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles. An undrafted rookie, Gaines was cut on the final day to trim rosters.
Former Northrop coach Matt Stinson, who remains close to his former player, said Gaines had a meeting after being cut with Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid.
They said he was good enough to make the team, but there are some political reasons and guaranteed money, Stinson said. At that point, he waited to see what was going on.
Gaines played four seasons at Penn State and earned All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2007 and 2008.
The Tigers-Cats (6-8) have four games remaining in the regular season.
He just wants to play, Stinson said. Just talking to people, the best route for him to end up on another NFL team is to have more tape. His tape for the preseason was really good. The best thing you can do is end up with tape to shop around. He is looking to make a name for himself and have more downs to show people. Right now, it is a chance to play.
