Letter (Web version): ‘Playing Doctor’ great amateur theater

I am writing to encourage our local community to experience Off Stage Production’s “Playing Doctor,” which ends Saturday.

I was fortunate to see the dress rehearsal on Oct. 15 and found the performance, from the acting to the costumes to the set design, a very entertaining package. The play is performed at the Senior Citizen Center, 220 Fox Road in Van Wert, Ohio. The OSP crew transforms the area into a very nice dinner-theater venue.

“Playing Doctor” is about a young man, Rob Brewster, who squandered the money his parents gave him to attend medical school to become a writer. When his parents decide to visit their doctor son, Rob convinces his actor friend and secretary to help him find people to act as patients. His plan ultimately fails and makes for a very amusing show.

While I am not an actor myself, I enjoy live theatre. I saw friends in a new light, never realizing the extent of their talent. It was an eye-opening experience into the quality of amateur theater and it is very rewarding to support my community.

We are very fortunate that Van Wert has three organizations in which to watch live theatre: Off Stage Productions, the Niswonger Performing Arts Center and the Civic Theatre – all unique in their own way.
