Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast on Thursday celebrated the opening of its new $8 million, 73,000-square-foot Student Life Center.

Ivy Tech officials, state legislators and community members gathered at the building, on the college’s north campus on St. Joe Road.

“It has been designed to provide our students with amenities and services we’ve never had before at Ivy Tech,” Interim Chancellor Russell Baker said. “I love the fact that under one roof, students will go to classes and have the opportunity for recreation.”

The Student Life Center is in the former Community Mall, which was owned by the Fort Wayne State Developmental Center.

The building includes science labs, classrooms, a fitness center, gymnasium, conference rooms, a coffee shop and grill.

The building renovation is part of a transformation and expansion of the north campus.

A 76,000-square-foot Regional Technology Center is also being constructed on the property.
