CHEERS to Steve Thompson, Bluffton High School athletic director, and Lutheran Air for delivering the game ball to the 50-yard line in a recent football game against the Southern Wells Raiders. CHEERS also to the Bluffton Athletic Boosters for the fantastic fireworks presentation after the game. CHEERS to Mark Lefebvre, Southern Wells Raider’s coach, for again demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship during the second half of the game. And finally, CHEERS to all players on both teams for the effort they put into the game on a wet, rainy night. All combined for a very entertaining evening, enjoyed by all who attended.

ALISON R. MANSFIELD Founder Operation U.S. Troop Support Operation Socks for Our Troops

JEERS to the owner of Indiana state representative license plate who raced me down Lake Avenue at 10 to 15 mph over the speed limit and cut me off at Anthony Boulevard. It’s a shame that even the people who are supposed to be representing us in our state government can’t learn how to drive properly.

TAYLOR VENABLE Fort Wayne

CHEERS to Allen County officers Lt. Sam Williams, John Arnett and Tim McCormick and representatives of the Fort Wayne Police Department, Doug Weaver, Ryan Crowley, Ziontu Ralhla and Meemee Ralha. They provided invaluable assistance in completing fingerprinting for 197 children to be included in identification kits that were handed out at our booth at the “Rally to Read” event at the Pontiac library branch on Sept. 26. Their interaction with the children was extraordinary. They are examples of the finest our law enforcement divisions have to offer in serving the citizens of our area.

ROSEMARIE BOSTELMAN Fort Wayne

CHEERS to the state of Indiana for setting high standards for its students, and more needs to be done. I personally do not say jeers (as a previous letter-writer did) to the state of Indiana for setting such high standards for seventh-graders who they must do two hours of homework per night, even on Fridays. Friday is a time to kick back and relax. Children can do the homework on Saturday or Sunday. Having just received a newsletter from a school that three of my children graduated from, I felt compelled to pass on some facts I learned. Indiana lags the national average in SAT scores in all three categories, reading, math and writing. Nationally, the above scores are 501, 515 and 493. In Indiana, they are 496, 507 and 480. The children’s alma mater scored, 527, 560 and 507 respectively. All have since graduated from college with honors. Our children had plenty of time to be kids and were active in sports, music and church activities.

LORI KEYS Executive Director Aboite New Trails

CHEERS to all who participated in the recent Fort For Fitness runs for a memorable event. Instead of watching “Sponge Bob and Friends,” my boys joined me to cheer the participants on as they passed by. We were the cowbell-clanking, tambourine-banging and maraca-shaking trio on Calhoun Street at the 4-mile detour. The race and our involvement was all my boys could talk about throughout the day. Congratulations to all who participated. They gave me a special moment with my sons.

JORDAN I. LEBAMOFF Fort Wayne

It’s my own fault. What was I thinking on Sept. 28 – leaving items that belong in my car outside my friend’s house on the side of the road while I ran out to vacuum the car out? My friend lives on a dead-end street, and I thought no one would drive that way anyway. I mean, no one was expected to come over. Unfortunately for me, my riding helmet, library books on tape (two of the tapes were still in the car), jumper cables, atlas, ice scrapper and paper towels (but not the window cleaner) were taken. So if there is someone out there who regularly traverses through Kurt Lane on the northeast side of town and peruses Old Brook Farm looking for “trash” and happens to recognize these items, please know that this wasn’t trash meant to be taken. The person took my prescription glasses, too, that were in a glass case. If anything, my four-hour drive home to Ohio seemed a lot longer. I’m on tape two, and someone has tape three. JEERS to whoever took my items.

RUTH McCULLAGH Salem, Ohio

CHEERS to the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders who met at several cemeteries Sept. 18 with a different war era to honor all POWs and MIAs. Lindenwood was chosen for the Korean War Veterans Indiana Chapter One for their patriotic program. This great group of riders gave of their time to honor all of the POWs and MIAs who didn’t return.

MARY ANNA ROEMKE Publicity Director KEN ROEMKE Commander Korean War Veterans Indiana Chapter One Fort Wayne

Easter Seals Arc would like to send CHEERS to the community members who were so kind in their donations of Beanie Babies for Operation Beanie. Through a collective effort, we were able to send more than 5,000 Beanie Babies to Sgt. Sheppard and his medic unit in Iraq to use as padding as well as gifts for the children who are often frightened by armed soldiers. We also received money to help with shipping and even non-perishable candy to send as well. Thank you!

TONY BELTON Community Relations Coordinator Arc of Northeast Indiana Inc.

CHEERS to Wendy Robinson, superintendent of Fort Wayne Community Schools, and Fort Wayne Education Association officials for working together to bring back parent-teacher conferences this year for the elementary and middle schools. Providing these opportunities for collaboration between parents and teachers establishes the expectation and importance of parental involvement.

KAREN SHOLLENBERGER Fort Wayne
