Hoosiers hurt by lack of TOs

Northwestern took its time as it made its way down the field for the eventual game-winning field goal.

Indiana couldn’t stop Mike Kafka during the drive that led to the Wildcats’ 29-28 victory Saturday. And the Hoosiers (4-4, 1-3 Big Ten) couldn’t stop the clock, having burned their final timeout with 7:11 remaining.

“That would have been nice (to have another timeout). But I think the timeouts we used, we used when we needed them,” wide receiver Mitchell Evans said. “It could have hurt us if we didn’t use them at those times. We just have to be smarter throughout the game so that we can save those for the end of the game when we need them.”

The lack of timeouts, the inability to capitalize on turnovers and a crucial failed red-zone opportunity all came back to bite IU. Of course, when a team takes a 28-3 lead, should those really become factors?

“It’s very tough. Obviously every time you come up on the losing end, it’s a bad result,” linebacker Matt Mayberry said.

With the Hawkeyes, Wisconsin, Penn State and Purdue remaining, it’s tough seeing where IU will get two more wins to become bowl eligible.
