The Timothy L. Johnson Academy will likely remain at its current location for the next three years, but board members are negotiating with the landlord on the terms of the agreement.

The southeast-side charter school is aiming to take over the entire space at the Come as You Are Community Church, 7910 S. Anthony Blvd.

Johnson Academy had been sharing the space with the church, but the congregation is looking for a new location to house its services, School Leader Steve Bollier said.

The school is using more of the space this year as the church slowly moves out. The board is waiting to approve a new lease until it can work out new language.

Board members also need to determine whether there can be an exit clause in the contract if they decide they want to move to a new location, Bollier said. The board will meet with Pastor Tony Payton in a closed session Nov. 9 to discuss the lease and will likely make a decision in public that same day.

Johnson Academy paid the church $10,000 per month under an old agreement, but that amount was determined based on the amount of building space the school occupied, Bollier said.

Charter schools are public schools that operate more independently in exchange for additional accountability. In addition to four-year public universities, the mayor of Indianapolis has the authority to grant charters. Ball State University is the only college in Indiana to have taken advantage of the ability.
