Watercraft crash victim died of blunt-force trauma to neck

The Fort Wayne man killed when his Jet Ski-type personal watercraft crashed Sunday died of severe blunt-force trauma to the neck, according to autopsy results from the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

Matthew Stocksdale, 37, was riding the craft along the Maumee River, just east of downtown Sunday afternoon. His craft hit a cable strung across the river by crews working on the Tecumseh Street bridge. That same cable then struck Stocksdale, leading to his fatal injury, according to Indiana conservation officers.

Stocksdale was being followed about 35 to 40 feet behind, by a friend, also operating a similar watercraft. That man was not injured. The cables are believed to have been strung to secure work barges at the construction site and have since been marked for visibility, officers said.
