A Bluffton man was arrested Tuesday in the shooting death of his wife, a former IPFW and University of Saint Francis basketball player.
Deputies were called just after 9 a.m. Tuesday to 649 E. County Road 100 S. in Bluffton. Inside the homes two-car garage, deputies found 28-year-old Amy White lying in the middle of the floor suffering from two apparent gunshot wounds to her chest, Wells County Sheriff Robert Frantz said.
White was taken by ambulance to Bluffton Regional Medical Center, where she died about an hour later.
An autopsy will be performed today, Frantz said.
Meanwhile, her husband, Tyler White, 27, of Bluffton, faces a preliminary charge of murder.
He was being held without bail at the Wells County Jail. A formal murder charge is expected today, the sheriff said.
Tyler White was home at the time of the shooting and made the 911 call, Frantz said.
He just said that someone had been shot and gave the location, Frantz said, adding that the shooting appears to be the result of a domestic dispute regarding custody of the couples son.
Amy Whites father, Mike Meyer, of Berne, said his daughter had gone to her in-laws home to pick up their 16 1/2 -month-old son, Maxwell.
The Whites, who had been married two to three years, had been separated for about 14 months, Meyer said.
They were scheduled to attend a temporary custody hearing today in Wells Circuit Court, he said.
Frantz said the couple were going through a divorce.
Deputies had not been called to that Bluffton address before, he said.
Meyer said his daughter was most recently living in Geneva with her boyfriend. Amy White was an assistant girls basketball coach at South Adams High School in Berne and assistant womens basketball coach at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, her father said.
A Saint Francis graduate, Amy White had studied sports management and had played for two years on the womens basketball team as a shooting guard, according to Gary Andrews, head coach of the Saint Francis womens basketball team.
Before that, she attended Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, where she played on the womens basketball team, her father said.
Amy White had previously helped coach girls basketball at Bluffton, Carroll and Churubusco high schools, her father said. She graduated from South Adams High School in 1999.
Meyer said his daughter spent most of her time with her son when she was not coaching. She had also taken up golf this past summer and was an avid runner.
She enjoyed being with her friends, too, Mike Meyer said. She had a tremendous amount of friends.
Andrews said he knew Amy White for more than a dozen years.
She was a great person. She always was in a good mood, Andrews said. As a player, she was a hard worker – she always wanted to do better.
She was well-liked by the players, too, Andrews said.
Were going to really miss her, he said. She was just a lot of fun to be around.
