Norwell High School was among the top three marching bands in the Class C competition.

The Ossian high school was awarded third place at the Indiana State School Music Association State Marching Band Finals Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Heritage Junior-Senior High School placed sixth and Concordia Lutheran High School won eighth place among the 10 bands in the class.

The three bands are among 40 high school bands competing for a state title. Based on the size of their high schools, the bands are divided into four classes, and four state titles will be awarded Saturday.

Norwell capitalized on their show title, "Bells." The band showcased their xylophone and marimba players; had a long black board running along the sidelines with gold bells painted on it; and had large cutouts of bells around the field.

One of those large bells had a swing hanging from it, which a color guard member used to start the show.

A series of white clouds sat on the field for Heritage’s performance. The clouds parted at the beginning and behind them sat a brass quartet.

Those clouds came into play later in the performance, when a trumpet soloist appeared from the top of one, followed by a second trumpet player across the field at the top of another cloud; culminating in a trio by the end.

Heritage’s show was called "Learning to Fly," and the music included "Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd; "The Firebird," by Igor Stravinsky; and "One Day I’ll Fly Away," by Joe Sample.

Concordia’s performance had a wooden arc and a flood, within about 10 minutes. Titled "Noah: A Journey of Faith," the Lutheran high school’s show encapsulated the religious journey of Noah.

It began with a member of the percussion sawing wood and another hammering, symbolizing the building of the arc. Later in the performance, a group of band members dragged a large blue tarp across the top of the band to signify the flood.

Class D performances begin at 4:10 p.m. Woodlan Junior-Senior High School is the second band to perform, at 4:23 p.m. Adams Central High School is the last band to take the field, at 6:07 p.m.
