INDIANAPOLIS -- DeKalb High School junior Raina Farmer took to the balance beam during the Class B awards ceremony.
A member of the marching band's color guard, Farmer did an exhibition routine as her fellow band members waited to see if the first place trophy was theirs. DeKalb didn't grab the top spot but came in seventh place among the 10 bands that competed in Class B. Northview High School of Brazil came in first.
DeKalb is among 40 high school bands that are competing at the Indiana State School Music Association State Marching Band Finals Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Ten bands in Class B were the first to perform, with performances by marching bands in Class C, D and A to follow throughout the day.
Based on the size of their high schools, the bands are divided into four classes. Four state titles will be awarded Saturday.
The show, titled "Balance," began with band members doing what looked like calisthenics, moving their arms and legs out and around. The woodwinds continued the movements while the brass section entered the musical scene. All of the musicians eventually began playing their instruments for the first big hold of the performance.
The Class C performances begin at 1:05 p.m. Heritage Junior-Senior High School performs at 1:57 p.m.; Concordia Lutheran performs at 2:10 p.m.; and Norwell takes the field at 2:36 p.m.
