Monday Morning Quarterback

Irish needed easy victory

Notre Dame got just what it needed in a 40-14 blowout of Washington State on Saturday in San Antonio’s Alamodome. The win moved the Irish to No. 19 in this week’s Associated Press poll.

After playing six games in a row decided by seven points or less, the Irish (6-2) needed to put away an opponent early and did that with receiver Golden Tate’s remarkable 50-yard touchdown catch between three defenders to close the first half with a 30-7 lead.

“I almost didn’t know what to do,” coach Charlie Weis said of his team’s first easy win since defeating Nevada 35-0 in the season opener. “It’s been so long (since) we’ve had a game where the game was put away.”

Two things didn’t go Notre Dame’s way as backup quarterback Dayne Crist (knee) and offensive guard Trevor Robinson (ankle) suffered injuries. Crist is scheduled to have an MRI today, and Robinson was on crutches Saturday night.

Crist’s injury will not hurt the Irish too much this year with the solid play of Jimmy Clausen, who reaggravated his turf toe in the third quarter but still threw for 268 yards and two scores Saturday. Robinson’s injury could disrupt a line that has made big strides this season.
