SOUTH BEND – Notre Dame freshman tight end Tyler Eifert will not have surgery to repair a bulging disc in his back.

Surgery would have ended the former Bishop Dwenger standout’s career, Irish coach Charlie Weis said Tuesday.

Eifert, who consulted with a specialist in Phoenix, will instead follow a rehabilitation program that will allow him to continue to play.

Weis said the rehab program should have Eifert ready to participate in spring practice.

“He’s going to have to be on this rehab, unfortunately, for the rest of his life though,” Weis said.

“Fortunately, he doesn’t need to have surgery, but he has an extensive rehab program that he has already been on.

“He’s on his way back to recovery.”

In October, Eifert said his back started bothering him in January, but it wasn’t to the point where he couldn’t play.

The 6-foot-5, 237-pound freshman will be able to apply for a medical redshirt because he played in only one game this season, Notre Dame’s 35-0 season-opening win over Nevada on Sept. 5.

“It will be good to have another year to get stronger and faster and learn even learn the playbook more,” Eifert said in October.
