Police believe the search for a diabetic man who disappeared last month from his home in Fremont has ended in tragedy.

Deputies found a body they think is that of Stuart Stalcup, 48, in a densely wooded area Thursday, less than half a mile from his house, Steuben County Sheriff Rick Lewis said.

An aerial search with the help of an Indiana State Police airplane discovered the remains near Indiana 120 and Steuben County Road 225 West. This was the first time the plane was available, according to the sheriff’s department.

The body has not been positively identified as Stalcup’s, though the clothes and physical characteristics match, Lewis said.

An autopsy today is expected to confirm the identity and point to a cause of death.

Authorities issued a Silver Alert for Stalcup on Oct. 11 after he left his family’s home near Snow Lake in Fremont that morning. He was described as being severely diabetic and had no insulin with him.

His family said at the time that they didn’t know why he left.

Police from multiple agencies searched for Stalcup for several days. The body was discovered in an area with thick undercover, Lewis said.

State police canceled the Silver Alert on Thursday at the request of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.
