Saint Francis women move to 2-0; men fall

The Saint Francis women’s basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 79-60 win over Daemen College on Saturday at the Hutzell Center.

The Cougars got 16 points from Chelsea Joseph, 14 from Meghan Prible and 12 each from Chanell Ridley and Bianca Woods, who also had 10 rebounds.

The Cougars beat Roberts Wesleyan 72-53 on Friday.

For the men, Saint Francis (1-1) fell to Siena Heights 75-72 on Saturday at home.

DeJovan Sawyer-Davis had 28 points and 13 rebounds for the Cougars. Qadr Owens added 15 points and six assists.

Siena Heights improved to 2-0.

The Cougars beat Ohio State-Lima 120-41 on Friday.

BASEBALL

MLB news

The Twins picked up outfielder Michael Cuddyer’s $10.5 million option for 2011. Cuddyer hit a career-high 32 home runs to lead the team. … Reliever J.J. Putz became a free agent one day after the Mets declined his $9.1 million option. … Twins pitcher Carl Pavano filed for free agency. … The NL champion Phillies said three players will have operations in the next week. Closer Brad Lidge will have surgery to remove a loose body from his right elbow, outfielder Raul Ibanez will have a sports hernia repaired and left-hander Scott Eyre will have loose bodies removed from his left elbow.

BASKETBALL

Butler cruises in exhibition

Guard Shelvin Mack scored 12 points and center Matt Howard had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 11 Butler past Taylor 75-44 in an exhibition game in Indianapolis. Forward Gordon Hayward had 10 points for the Bulldogs.

NBA news

The Pistons say forward Tayshaun Prince will be out of the lineup indefinitely because of a small rupture of a disc in his lower back. … The Nets say forward Chris Douglas-Roberts has tested positive for the H1N1 virus. Douglas-Roberts has been averaging 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds in five games.

BOXING

Heavyweight Haye claims WBA crown

David Haye backed up weeks worth of boasting, winning the WBA heavyweight title with a majority decision over Nikolai Valuev in Nuremberg, Germany. Haye won his third fight since moving up from cruiserweight. Haye improved to 23-1 with 21 KOs. Valuev’s record dropped to 50-2 with 34 KOs.

FOOTBALL

Victims honored before game

A moment of silence was observed before the Army-Air Force game in Colorado Springs, Colo., to honor the victims of the Fort Hood shootings. The brief observance at Falcon Stadium was also meant to remember soldiers from nearby Fort Carson who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. About 40 squadrons of cadets from the Air Force Academy and West Point stood at attention on the field. Thousands of civilians and military personnel stood quietly in the stands.

Packers’ lineman placed on IR

The Packers have ended Jason Spitz’s season, placing the offensive lineman on injured reserve with a lower-back injury that has been slow to heal. The center/guard appeared in five games this season as part of an offensive line that has yielded a league-worst 31 sacks. The Packers also signed wide receiver Biren Ealy from the practice squad. The 6-foot-2 Ealy appeared in four games with Tennessee in 2007.

U.S. trails Italy 2-0 in Fed Cup final

Alexa Glatch and Melanie Oudin lost in straight sets Saturday to give Italy a 2-0 lead over the United States in the Fed Cup final in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Glatch lost to Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-1, and Francesca Schiavone rallied after a two-hour rain delay to defeat Oudin 7-6 (2), 6-2. Reverse singles and doubles were scheduled for today in the best-of-five series. The U.S. has won all nine of its previous meetings with Italy.

Federer, Djokovic set for Swiss final

Roger Federer will play Novak Djokovic in the Swiss Indoors final in a bid for a fourth straight title in Basel, Switzerland, his hometown tournament. Federer defeated childhood friend Marco Chiudinelli 7-6 (7), 6-3 in one semifinal. In the earlier one, Djokovic saved three match points in rallying to beat Radek Stepanek 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2.
