President Obama could face off with the ruling military leaders of Myanmar during his first presidential trip to Asia that begins Wednesday.

Obama will visit, in order, Japan, Singapore, China and South Korea. During the eight-day trip he will attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC) summit in Singapore. The president will also meet with the leaders of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), including – possibly – Myanmar’s military junta.

The possible meeting follows the Obama administration’s decision to reverse previous U.S. policy and at least open the door to U.S. talks with leaders of the nation, known as Burma until the military changed its name after taking power.

Omnibus lecture

Journalist Andrew Sullivan, whose popular blog, “Daily Dish,” appears on The Atlantic Online, will speak Tuesday as part of Indiana University-Purdue University’s Omnibus Lecture series.

Sullivan appears regularly on “The Chris Matthews Show” and on HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher.” He is the author of “The Conservative Soul” and “Virtually Normal: An Argument About Homosexuality.” As editor of The New Republic, he gained national attention in 1994 for a scathing critique of the Clinton health care plan.

Sullivan has testified before Congress on the Defense of Marriage Act and has written extensively on gay rights. He was diagnosed with HIV in 1993. His lecture is co-sponsored by the AIDS Task Force of Northeast Indiana as part of its 25th anniversary observance.

Property taxes due

The fall installment of Allen County property taxes is due Tuesday. Bills can be paid at the treasurer’s office in the City-County Building, Room 104. The office is open until 6 p.m. Tuesday to accept payment.

Veterans Day

Wednesday is Veterans Day, a time to honor current and former members of the armed forces. Many government offices and banks will be closed.
