Paul Harding High School students Brandan Vilayphone and RaSheem McElvene were dressed up Thursday in honor of a special occasion.
The students were greeting people and passing out programs for the East Allen County Schools high schools Veterans Day celebration. Half a dozen local veterans attended the school assembly, where students read poems about American wars, and veterans shared their stories.
They fought in a war, said Vilayphone, 16. If they didnt, we wouldnt be doing this right now.
The students paid respect by following the Veterans Day traditions of singing the national anthem and saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Student Asia Brooks stood in front of the Concordia Lutheran High Schools Junior ROTC members, who attended the assembly to post colors, as she sang a resounding version of The Star Spangled Banner.
A group of students led the student body in the pledge, facing not only the large American flag on the wall but the seated veterans.
