A Kosciusko County sheriff’s deputy died in the line of duty Thursday after his squad car collided with a truck.

Sgt. Jeffery B. Shaw was in a department squad car when it collided with the GMC flatbed truck about 2:45 p.m. on Indiana 14 west of Kosciusko County Road 100 East, said Sgt. Trent Smith, an Indiana State Police spokesman.

The circumstances of the crash, about four miles east of Silver Lake, were not available Thursday evening.

Shaw was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw, where he died, police said.

The driver of the truck, 53-year-old Steven L. Byerly of Fort Wayne sustained minor injuries.

Shaw was a 15-year veteran of the sheriff’s department.

He spent four years working in the work release division before being hired as a deputy in 1998.
