A Kosciusko County sheriff's deputy died Thursday after his squad car collided with a truck.
Sgt. Jeffery B. Shaw was on a routine patrol in a department squad car when an oncoming GMC flatbed truck loaded with scaffolding struck him about 2:45 p.m. on Indiana 14 west of Kosciusko County Road 100 East, said Sgt. Trent Smith, an Indiana State Police spokesman.
The eastbound truck veered off the road, overcorrected and crossed the centerline. It hit Shaw's Ford Crown Victoria on the driver's side door. Both vehicles were on fire after impact, police said.
The crash occurred about four miles east of Silver Lake.
Shaw was trapped in his car and had to be extracted by firefighters. He was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw, where he died of blunt-force trauma, police said.
The driver of the truck, Steven L. Byerly, 53, of Fort Wayne, suffered a minor head injury. A passing motorist helped pull him from his truck.
Shaw, 40, was a 15-year sheriff's department veteran. He leaves behind a wife, Angela, son Nicholas, 9, and daughter Isabella, 7.
Sheriff's department spokesman Chad Hill said in an e-mail Friday morning that funeral arrangement had not yet been made.
