CHICAGO – Patrick Kane got Chicago started with an early unassisted goal, and the Blackhawks held on after building a three-goal lead to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 Friday night for their third straight win.

Cristobal Huet made 29 saves in Chicago’s sixth straight home win.

Phil Kessel’s second goal of the game, 5:33 into the final period, pulled Toronto to 3-2.

Troy Brouwer and John Madden also scored the Blackhawks. Brouwer deflected in teammate Patrick Sharp’s shot on the power play to put the Blackhawks up 3-0 in the second and it looked as if Chicago was on its way to an easy win.

Toronto’s Vesa Toskala made 31 saves, including a nice stop on Jonathan Toews near the end of the third that would have extended Chicago’s lead to three goals.

ISLANDERS 4, HURRICANES 3, OT: Kyle Okposo scored with 14.4 seconds left in overtime, and John Tavares had the first two-goal game to help visiting New York extend Carolina’s winless streak to 14 games.

Mark Streit added a goal, and Martin Biron made 26 saves for New York. The Islanders blew a three-goal lead before winning in overtime.

CAPITALS 3, WILD 1: Brian Pothier scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and host Washington won its fourth in a row without Alex Ovechkin.

The NHL’s highest scoring team was nearly thwarted by a backup goalie who more than doubled his save total for the season, but Pothier’s wrister from the left circle 2 minutes into the final period hit just inside the far post to beat Josh Harding, who was screened on the play.

BLUE JACKETS 3, DUCKS 2, SO: Rick Nash scored the winning shootout goal and also had a goal in regulation, and Mathieu Garon stopped both Anaheim shooters in the tiebreaker for host Columbus.

Bobby Ryan and Todd Marchant scored for Anaheim, which has lost four straight on the road.

SABRES 2, FLAMES 1, SO: Jason Pominville scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout, and Ryan Miller made 25 saves to help Buffalo snap Calgary’s win streak at four games.

Daymond Langkow scored for Calgary, and Kiprusoff made 32 saves. The Flames lost for the first time on the road in exactly a month, and have dropped seven straight in Buffalo.

THRASHERS 7, KINGS 0: Ilya Kovalchuk and Maxim Afinogenov each had two goals and two assists to help host Atlanta win its third straight.

Thrashers rookie Evander Kane, the fourth overall draft pick, also scored two goals and had an assist.
