Snider teacher Monette King likes to teach the students in her fashion and textiles technology class about more than simple sewing.
She likes to teach them about volunteerism. And about the less fortunate. And about how good it feels to make a difference in someones life.
During the last few weeks, Kings high school students were busy sewing blankets and stuffed animals for the children living at Charis House, a Fort Wayne womens shelter. Last Monday morning, when the projects were complete, King and her students presented the gifts to a shelter staff member during class.
A lot of these kids have been on the receiving end of aid, King said. This is their chance to give back to the community.
As 25 sophomores, juniors and seniors sat before her, Charis House staff member Melissa McKeeman spoke about her organization and told them why their efforts mattered to the children at the shelter.
When someone says, This is yours; someone made this just for you – thats an experience that these kids have never had, she said. It makes a major difference.
Sophomore Yvonne Murdock, who made a blanket and a bear for the children, said she enjoyed listening to McKeeman.
I think this was a good idea, and this was a good organization, she said.
