The ruling of quarterback Jimmy Clausen fumbling against Pittsburgh near the end of last Saturday's game led to coach Charlie Weis saying that replay officials are becoming the stars of college football games.
The play was originally called on incomplete pass, but after review it was changed to a fumble effectively ending the Irish's chance at a comeback.
"From watching the play the a bunch of times, if they would have called the play a fumble on the field, I could see them not having enough information to over rule it," Weis said Tuesday. "But the fact that called the play an incomplete pass on the field, I believe the same thing. There was no evidence to change the call that was on the field. That is my only gripe."
As for the chop block called on Dan Wenger that pushed the Irish back 15 yards two plays before the fumble, here's what Weis thought of that call.
"I think they could have called that," Weis said. "What happened was it was a three-step drop play. Danny was going to cut him. The reason the job block was called wasn't what Wegner did. It's because (center) Eric Olsen's guys dropped. They went into rushing only a couple of guys, so he was looking for something to do. He turned to the right and there was this guy. When he turned to the right and put his hands up, that's when Dan cut the guy. It wasn't a high-low situation, but the fact there was an engagement between the two players that's why they called it."
