Driver dies as car hits ditch, rolls

Wet roadway, medical condition examined as factors

One person is dead after a Monday morning single-vehicle crash just east of Woodburn, according to Allen County police.

The crash was reported just before 9 a.m. on State Line Road North at Slusher Road.

There, a male was driving a Ford Focus south on State Line Road North when the car gradually left the west side of the roadway, went into a ditch and rolled onto its top, county police spokesman Sgt. Steve Stone said.

The Ford then burst into flames. The driver died at the scene.

The driver’s name has not been released pending family notification.

An autopsy is scheduled for today, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said.

The car had no other occupants, and police are not sure what caused the crash, Stone said.

“It was raining pretty hard out there and it was wet,” he said.

Road conditions may have played a role, the driver could have fallen asleep or a medical condition could have been a factor, Stone said.

Stone said because the driver gradually left the road, an abrupt distraction – such as a deer in the road – is not believed to have caused the crash.
