New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick's decision to go for it on fourth-and-two Sunday night against the Colts has been dissected from every angle since Indianapolis' 35-34 win.
Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis jokingly talked about how Belichick's gamble helped him following the Irish's second straight loss when they fell to No. 8 Pittsburgh on Saturday.
"He took a lot of pressure off me. That's my take," Weis said to a round of laughter. "I was only the story for a day instead of two days, you know."
As far as the play itself, Weis said he had no doubt that the fourth-down play was discussed well before the game.
"At each game Bill is so meticulous in what he does, I'm sure it was discussed with his coaching staff – if this situation presents itself, this is what we're going to do. He doesn't do things on a whim," Weis said. "When he did it, I'm sure it was with everyone's knowledge and everyone's agreement, and it just didn't work out.
"But I've been on that headset plenty of times, and the call did not surprise me in the least. What surprised me is when I went to bed it was 34-17. So the fact that the game ended how it did is what surprised me. Because I was a little caught off guard when I heard what the final was."
Weis said he wouldn't have been the one making the call to go for it as an offensive coordinator, saying it would have been Belichick's decision alone to go for it on fourth down.
Whether he would have made the same call, Weis didn't question his former boss.
"I wasn't in that situation, so I can't say that," Weis said. "But I can promise you in a critical situation in New England, you know, the head coach is going to make the call, and we're going to be ready to go with whatever he says to do. I can't tell you what I'd do in the same situation, because, you know, I have not done all the due diligence that he did and I wasn't playing against the Colts and Peyton Manning and all that other stuff, so I couldn't tell you."
