WASHINGTON – People who buy stamps, mail packages and keep post office boxes at the Diplomat Plaza station wont have to change their habits. But patrons at the Waynedale station wont know for weeks whether their campaign to keep the station open has worked.
The Postal Service will announce Friday that the list of 300 city and suburban stations under review for closure has been reduced. Five of the 10 Hoosier stations on the October list have been removed after the district manager in Indianapolis looked at factors such as whether another station is nearby, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Both the Diplomat Plaza and Old Trail Road stations are on Fort Waynes south side, about six miles apart.
Facing billions of dollars in deficits, the Postal Service is looking at hundreds of city and suburban post offices to consolidate. A list that began with nearly 700 potential closures during the summer has been culled.
Last month the list was cut to about 300, and that figure will be trimmed further in a list that will be made public Friday.
In the list that will be released Friday, five remain under review: the Waynedale station on Old Trail Road, one in Bloomington, two in Gary and one in Indianapolis.
The USPS division office in Indianapolis received about 100 comments from people who use the Waynedale station, USPS spokeswoman Kim Yates said.
If a final decision is made by the division manager to recommend that USPS headquarters in Washington close the Waynedale station, those comments will be taken into account, said Greg Frey, a spokesman in Washington.
The agency posted a $3.8 billion loss for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 and has proposed ways to cut back, including reducing the number of urban and suburban post offices and delivering mail on five – rather than six – days each week.
