Most area counties still in double-digit unemployment, state says

Indiana's preliminary seasonally adjusted unemployment rate showed little change in October, with most northeast Indiana counties still in double digits, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development reported Friday.

It said the state's preliminary rate of 9.8 percent is one-tenth of 1 percentage point higher than a revised September rate of 9.7 percent, which is considered statistically insignificant.

The national unemployment rate increased in October by four-tenths of 1 percentage point, to 10.2 percent.

Elkhart County was listed as having the state's highest unemployment rate, at 14.9 percent.

Here are the department's rankings for counties in northeast Indiana:

  • 2) Noble, 14.7 percent;
  • 3) LaGrange, 14.4 percent;
  • 5) Steuben, 12.7 percent;
