Citizen objections prove unconvincing to commissioners

The Allen County commissioners approved a rezoning request Thursday that would allow a planned Dollar General store to move forward in Monroeville.

The plan commission last month recommended that property at Indiana 101 and Monroeville Road be rezoned to limited commercial to allow the retailer to build a 9,000-square-foot store.

The 1.7-acre property was zoned for agriculture.

Residents opposed the project and presented a petition signed by 196 people asking the plan commission to reject the plan.

Residents said the store would reduce property values and increase traffic.

Some also noted that commercially zoned property is already available in town.

The store is proposed for the outskirts of town.

But Monroeville’s town council supported the project because it would create jobs, provide goods to residents and attract other businesses to the small town.

The project’s engineer told the plan commission Thursday that the developer will work with the town on the possibility of adding sidewalks to connect with a sidewalk planned to the south.

The development plan also sets aside space for the town to add a welcome sign.

The area is considered the town’s front door, and city officials plan to annex the property.
